About you:

Ideal Candidate Skills/Specific Knowledge

You will need to already be studying an undergraduate degree in Psychology or Social Care at University.

You will have good time management and administrative skills
Excellent listening and communication skills
Be empathetic, tactful, sensitive, non-judgemental
You should be committed to understanding the needs of people living with mental health issues, their carers, friends and loved ones
You will have good IT skills with a proven ability to adapt to new systems

The role:

Whether you’re stressed, depressed or in crisis. We’ll listen, give you support and advice, and fight your corner. And we’ll push for a better deal and respect for everyone experiencing a mental health problem.

Duties Include:
• Receive and respond to general enquiries about the service
• Running and Facilitating Supportive Listening groups
• Using the Charity Log data/client management system:
• Receive, upload and check referral documentation, ensuring all necessary information has been provided.
• Send acknowledgement and confirmation letters/emails to clients in a timely manner to keep them updated on referral status.
• Using the information provided by Volunteer Listeners, update client records following contact calls to ensure a timely and complete record of contacts is maintained.
• At the request, and under the supervision, of the Co-ordinator.
• To undertake initial telephone assessments to determine the client’s current needs and explain about how the service operates.
• Liaise with Volunteer Listeners to achieve optimum client caseload taking into consideration both client and volunteer needs.

Our supportive listening groups are about creating a safe, welcoming space where everyone feels able to share their feelings and talk openly about their mental health.
The environment is one of gentle curiosity – asking why certain feelings have come up, trying to identify what the emotions are that can cause certain behaviours, looking for patterns in feelings / behaviours / responses.
The desired outcome is to gain a better understanding of ourselves and other, to become more sociable, to have more perspective and be able to see the bigger picture. Negative feeling are also welcome, as are feelings that may be ‘unacceptable ‘in the outside world. This service does not give advice, but it does offer information signposting where needed. Volunteer Listeners are allocated to clients and contact them on an agreed, regular basis. It is an appointment-based service for a time-limited period (12 sessions).

You will need to complete a full DBS check, Provide 1 Academic reference and 1 Character Reference.
You will need to complete a general Induction and training with the Volunteer Lead and service lead.
