Placements for Students

In the current job market, employers are looking for more than a great degree. You also need to demonstrate key skills for the workplace.

Many colleges & universities run academic modules with placements built in. Additionally, places of higher education usually run an exclusive placements programme of term-time opportunities for both undergraduates and postgraduates across all years of study.

Placement vs Volunteer

People who do placements are usually students either in college or university.  When applying for a position it is important to remember that placements and volunteers are both unpaid and with placements everything goes through the education provider.  Placements are allocated under a supervisor who is a specialist in that department and also offer supervisions and support throughout the experience.

Develop your potential

  • Strengthen your CV and LinkedIn profile with essential work experience.
  • Build your network and wider understanding of the working environment.
  • Forge links with employers which could turn into career opportunities when you graduate.
  • Apply study skills in practical environments and research for your dissertation.

“I have developed some really important skills during my placement.  Things like professional boundaries, self-confidence, dealing with safeguarding concerns, administration and technical skills and so much personal and professional growth. I have been given the freedom to explore, adapt and develop in my role – whilst still being completely supported and given any guidance when needed.  I have also learned so much about the mental health sector and the charity sector.

I’m sad to finish my placement but very excited for the future.”

At Nottinghamshire Mind we aim to offer placement opportunities for people, at either college or university, who are studying for a degree or other formal qualification.  Some of our placements will provide support directly to service delivery & development, others could support operational functions.

We’re all about finding the right people for the right opportunities.

If you are on a course that requires a placement, and you are interested in doing this with Nottinghamshire Mind, then please contact our Volunteer & Placement Lead at volunteercoordinator@nottinghamshiremind.org.uk for more information.
